Attention citizens of Earth!
Lo, for while it may have been five full cycles around the sun since our last proper studio release (2007’s All Things Are Light) we of The Linus Pauling Quartet return this summer with a new album, a greatest hits anthology, a slew of shows, and our first video. Seriously, it’s a lot of stuff so here are the deets:
RELEASES
Bag of Hammers
It’s the first studio album in 5 years from the LP4. Bongs of Power, Heavy Riffs, Monkeys in Space, D&D shit, and who the fuck knows what else wrapped up in one glorious album of Texas Stoner Psych (CD and 2Xmono LP on Homeskool Records). On the left is a peek at Shelby Hohl’s amazing album cover and as we get closer to the release date, perhaps we’ll share more of it as well as some stills from the upcoming video too.
Greatest Hits (as yet untitled)Coming out before BOH, this multi-disk set is curated by Bubba Hightower of Homeskool Records and consists of tracks from all our recordings since our first release in 1994 as well as a few surprises.
LIVE SHOWS
Remember two things: “anything worth doing is worth overdoing” and “nothing is too stupid or too ridiculous in the world of ROCK!” Accordingly, we are starting up an arms race of lights, fog, films, and even a few surprises we’ll keep under its collective hat for the time being. You know how that scene in 2001 where the apes figure out how to use a jawbone as a weapon? That’s kind of what we’re going for… but with ROCK! So, mark your calendars:
APRIL
April 21, 2012 – with From Beyond and Project Grimm @ Rudyard’s
We officially kick off with a show at our home turf, Rudyard’s, with local Doom Metal gods, From Beyond as well as the guitar muscle of Project Grimm. Lo, it will be heavy.
April 14, 2012 – (tentative date – TBA in Austin) Lee Jackson ALS benefit show
[Event Update: now May, ???, 2012]
Before the Rudyard’s show we will be playing a show we wish didn’t exist and that is the ALS benefit in honor of the late Texas Psych scribe and all around good dude, Lee Jackson. Jackson’s presence as a member of the Terrastock family is immeasurable and we are still in shock at his passing especially at such a young age. So we will be approaching this both with a sense of sadness at his passing and a certain amount of humbled gratitude that we will have the opportunity to celebrate his life with others.
MAY
May 12, 2012 – with Fiskadoro and Burn The Boats @ Walter’s
April will continue with two more shows. The first at Walter’s with pyrrhic rockers Burn the Boats and post-Punkers Fiskadoro. Fiskadoro is a band we’ve wanted to play with for years but our schedules never seemed to ever mesh to make that happen so we take this as a good omen that, finally, we get to join forces. Burn the Boats are a band we’ve dug for a while – just lots of fun gut-punching rock and roll.
May 26, 2012 – 29-95 False Idols tribute to Velvet Underground w/ Linus Pauling Quartet, Muhammad Ali & Future Blondes @ The Continental Club (link)
This is going to be one Plastic Exploding Inevitable of a party!!! We have over an hour’s worth of VU sings lined-up already. Honestly, we’ve been busting our asses going through all these songs; half our practices are simply rehearsing for this one. It’s been challenging and a lot of fun for us and we’re gonna really do this to the nines – shades, silver balloons, oh yeah!!!
By the way, Muhammad Ali are awesome, check out the video for their song Drugs (link) – love that tune! Oh and we hear Domokos of Future Blondes’ is going to do some Reed/VU tribute thing which should be whack!
JUNE
Bag of Hammers: Texas Pre-Release Shows
June 22, 2012- with TBA @ Fitzgerald’s (Houston)
June 23, 2012- with Wo Fat @ TBA (Dallas)
June 24, 2012- with ST37 @ Trailer Space (Austin)
Then, in June, we will have three pre-release shows scheduled in Houston, Dallas, and Austin. We fucking love these bands we’re playing with for these shows. Wo Fat are these brilliant riff-heavy motherfuckers from Dallas with killer guitar and a rhythm section so tight it will choke you and Austin’s ST37 are practically family to us; classic Texas Psych that never fails to make our heads explode.
OK, you are likely asking, why pre-release? Well, here is the deal. This video we’re doing won’t be completed until the end of May. Once we send that over to the label’s PR folks, the six week countdown for the official world-wide release date. So, what this means is that all you folks in Texas will get a chance to pick up the new album a full month before it is released world-wide!
Stay tuned; it’s gonna get weird,
The LP4
