The great Bubba Hightower ponders Homeskool’s next move.
OK let’s just get to it shall we? Bag Of Hammers won’t be released until sometime in April, perhaps May of 2012. That’s a couple of months from the aforementioned late February release date you may have read about on this blog and in some prior press releases so I feel perhaps an explanation is in order.
If you recall, we had a December release date but, as you read previously, the studio was out of service for a month which caused us to miss that original deadline. We looked at our mixing schedule and figured that we should easily have the album mixed and mastered in time for a late February/ early March release (just in time for SXSW) and we are easily on track to make that deadline. We’ve been having a lot of fun mixing the tracks and even added some extra stuff since we had the extra time. In fact, we were doing so well that we even previewed two mixes on December 2 on KPFT plus Shelby Hohl sent us the cover art so we were getting ready show that off to everyone too. So, you ask, if everything is going so well, why the delay?
Here is the thing; working with a label is always a little tricky. If you are releasing something entirely by yourself, you can do anything on a whim but labels have these things called release schedules and they tend to complicate matters. Right now Homeskool has quite a few releases on its plate. Not only our album but B L A C K I E, Female Demand, and Fat Tony have releases coming up in the next few months. That’s really cool but a small indie label can only do so much to promote its releases so our pushing back our album back to February/March tended to be a bit of a problem for them. There is a lot of very cool stuff going on behind the scenes at the label that I’m not sure I’m really allowed to discuss but long story short, while the label says we can release the album in February or March if we want to, the advantages of waiting a couple of months just make too much sense.
Don’t misunderstand me, this isn’t a label being a bully or anything like that. Homeskool is working hard behind the scenes to help the artists on the label. When we met with Bubba last week, it was clear he was actually taking risks and thinking outside the box. The meeting was very much, Bubba telling us here is what we can do, and here is how I can maximize my time and resources to where I’m doing the best I can for this album. We’ve know this guys since High School and while he may seem a little kooky at times, the guy is a pretty straight shooter. OK, not a little kooky but a lot kooky but he wouldn’t bullshit you.
So, our apologies for the delay. I hope you guys can wait a couple extra months but the results will be worth it, we promise.
In the meantime, we’ll be keeping you guys up to date on our progress and check our calendar because we will be playing quite a bit more shows in 2012.
